Spring Parenting Seminar Series

As part of the District's continued commitment to educate our parents and community members, the Student Services Department has coordinated several evening presentations on the topic of parenting.  For each of these presentations, childcare will be provided, so we hope to see many of you join us as we welcome some great speakers to the District!

Ms. Sharon Slover presents her discussion entitled, "Road Map to the Future -Transition & Community Services."  Parental involvement is “key” in the transition process. Though there are no specific guidelines for parents to follow, there are several roles for them to play. Sharon will be bringing together county agencies to make it easier for families to connect with services. This seminar is only open to families receiving special education services through an IEP.

Dr. Robert Foltz presents his discussion entitled, "ADHD - Current Treatments and Concerns."  While there have been many treatments available for ADHD, their overall effectiveness remains a concern. Dr. Foltz provides an overview of the diagnosis of ADHD and the impact it can have on a youth’s performance in the classroom.

Mr. Dave McKenna presents his discussion entitled, "Understanding & Avoiding Power Struggles with Children & Adolescents."
 Parenting poses many challenges; we often find ourselves in the middle of power struggles. Dave McKenna will help you identify the components of a conflict, identify common sources of conflict, and assist parents in creating positive solutions.

Dr. Anthony Ebel presents his discussion entitled, "Improving the Health of our Future Generations."  
Poor nutrition, toxicity, sedentary living, emotional stress and anxiety are diseases that are no longer “later in life” but instead obesity, diabetes, even cancer and heart disease are affecting our youth. Dr. Tony will show parents strategies and action steps to teach children how to live a life of health and wellness.

Dr. Chinni Chilamkurti presents her discussion entitled, “Smarts” Alone are not Sufficient for Success – Emotion & Emotion Regulation."
 Performance and grades in school aren’t the only indicators of a child’s success. Recent research points to the critical role of emotional and social competence in the overall development of children. Dr. Chinni discusses what teachers and parents can do to help children develop and enhance these skills.

Ms. Dawn Nendze presents her discussion entitled, "Strategies for Reducing Risky Behavior."
 Today’s youth face significant challenges involving alcohol/drug abuse, violence, and Internet involvement. Factors such as brain development, belief systems, media and peers influence these behaviors. Learn to identify these challenges, focusing on risky behaviors, and strategies to prevent or reduce involvement.
